(Earth's Children #6)

In The land of Painted Caves, Jean M. Auel brings the ice-age epic Earth's Children series to an extraordinary conclusion. Ayla, one of the most remarkable and beloved heroines in contemporary fiction, continues to explore the world and the people around her with curiosity, insight, and above all, courage.

The Clan of the Cave Bear was a masterful character driven drama, if slightly plodding, an intensive study of both the nature of characters and relationships. The protagonist, Ayla, was a flawed and vulnerable girl possessed of genuinely admirable determination, existing in a very dangerous, brutal and unfair world which caused her to suffer real hardships and even be threatened with death on more than one occasion. The Land of Painted Caves is a poorly written, repetitive, tedious, unenjoyable

I can save you the trouble of attempting to plough through Ms Auel's Potteresque doorstop in a few easy sentences.
(view spoiler)[1) Ayla, who has become increasingly superpowered with each book, is described in the first chapter as having been born with heightened acuity in all her senses, but not realising just how unique she is. Why didn't we know about this before? And what about the detailed descriptions in Clan of the Cave Bear of how Ayla had to work hard to learn all these skills because

All right, that's finally done. Nothing like making a stomach bug feel worse by reading a very disappointing book.
First off, I will say that I do admire Ms. Auel for a couple of things: 1) She researched this like no one else. The depth and breadth of her experiences while writing all this are absolutely commendable. Above and beyond. Very few people get interested in something and go that far into learning about it. And 2) She has always said (in the few interviews I can find) that she wrote th

If you've read her previous books, you could probably skip part one and just go straight to Part Two.. unless you wanted to read and reread and reread all the major points of the previous books just for fun.
Key points you will enjoy being beaten over the head with:

I know, I know..this series went crashingly downhill after Clan of the Cave Bear, but I still want to find out how the saga ends.
And..now I'm done. Bleah. Talk about going out with a whimper. Even though it got to be a little ridiculous about how Ayla invented everything from needles to helicopters (heh), it was at least interesting to me to read how those things *might* have been created. After waiting so long to read the 'final' episode in Ayla's story, I can only say: disappointing.
You can read the other reviews to find discussions of the repetition (from previous books, from section to section within the same book, of cave painting descriptions, etc.), and in my opinion, the use of repetition was worse than usual for this author; however, what struck me was that it felt as though each section was written entirely separately as the tone was completely different for each. Other than finding out what happens to Ayla, Jondalar and Family, this was a terribly written book. It could easily have been edited down to 100-200 pages max. Cornelius Ryan has a knack for writing military histories that are incredibly accessible. I'm a far cry from being an 'armchair general.' I didn't grow up playing Risk, and my primary point of reference for distinguishing between aircraft carriers and destroyers is the number of pegs required to sink them in the game Battleship (and even then I manage to mix them up). Simply one of the best military histories out there. Mr. Ryan's last book was his masterpiece. He got the pathos and the tragedy of Market Garden right, and he lays the blame squarely where it belonged. At the feet of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery. The plan was flawed, and trying to run an entire corps up a road that was barely one tank wide should have been enough to kill the plan..as it was, it was not, and some 8000 British paras, along with thousands of Americans and Dutch civil..more

Completed thirty years after the battle, A Bridge Too Far has complete coverage of Operation Market Garden, from the discussions leading up to it through the aftermath and results. This was Ryan's last book (cancer) and exceedingly well researched, though perhaps a little too complete.
Personal recollections, military records, and sources from both sides of the battle make this volume an excellent resource. Unfortunately, so much information can drag down the narrative a little; perhaps some of i

Amazing. Simply amazing. The 1st Airborne, the 101st, the 82nd, and the Polish Airborne made a daring attempt to end the war early. A drop into Holland the veer around the retreating Germans. An audacious but risky operation. The largest airborne drop of the war. Unfortunately they landed in the midst of a retreating army as well as two SS Panzer divisions. The paratroopers held as long as possible for the meetup of the XXX Armored Corps, bur Model's troops held them up far too long. Ultimately..more

Many, many years ago, I watched the movie A Bridge Too Far. Just the other night, I watched the movie again. This time, I have more understanding of the battle after reading the Band of Brothers series and reading Cornelius Ryan's book that inspired the movie, A Bridge Too Far. Ryan's book helped to fill in a number of answers I had while watching the movie. Read more
Cornelius Ryan's final book of 3 regarding World War II, a Bridge Too Far details the bold failed Market Garden operation. Ryan mixes corroborated first hand accounts of the battle with accepted military facts. Details of superhuman efforts, heroism, and loss, provide a moving portrayal of the greatest generations courage and sacrifice.
Very accessible while still being detailed enough. I very much appreciated his mentioning his sources throughout the book as well as any difficulties he had in gathering interviews or details.

I Am Number Four

Terrifically written, tragic in its unfolding, and poignant in its detailing of all those involved, this is a stunning recreation and account of the not entirely successful drive of the allied forces to recapture river crossings from Eindhoven to Arnhem..the last, the bridge in Arnhem being that on ‘too far'.

This is an extraordinary work of war journalism, the best I've ever read. A war correspondent, Cornelius Ryan spent decades after WWII interviewing 1200 people including President Eisenhower and Allied and Axis generals and soldiers as well as members of the Dutch underground in order to preserve the history of the failed Market-Garden campaign, which cost more Allied lives (17,000) than the Normandy invasion (12,000). The result is 600 pages of awe-inspiring, poignant, funny, ridiculous and tra..more

Tells the story Operation Market Garden, one of the bigggest US-British offensives of WW II. The primary objective was to gain control of a major bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem in Holland that would allow an immediate land invasion into Germany before winter. Land forces could not accomplish this because they had outrun allied supply lines which still ran back to Normandy. Antwerp, a major port, was in allied hands but the approaches to the port and the Schelde remained in German control allo..more

A Bridge Too Far is the 2nd Epic by Cornelius Ryan (the first being 'The Longest Day' based on Normandy landings of 6 June 1944)
Ryan follows the same working principle of conducting several interviews from personnel from both ends of the fighting sides and converting these into a lucidly written narrative of actual war, the technique which worked to perfection in the Longest Day.
The book basically covers the Allied Operation called 'Operation Market Garden' in which Allied Top Brass landed thous

'.. la pregunta no formulada seguía siendo: ¿cuánto tiempo más debían resistir? En aquellos momentos, en las primeras horas del domingo 24 de septiembre, después de ocho días de batalla, se calculaban las fuerzas de Urquhart en menos de 2.500 hombres. Y para todos ellos solamente había una pregunta: ¿cuándo llegarán las fuerzas de Monty?' — 0 likes
